Born in 1991 in the town of Tiksi, located in the Russian Arctic. Maxim had been a professional ice hockey player for 15 years before discovering his passion for filmmaking. In 2018, he graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, documentary filmmaking faculty in Moscow.
In his personal work Maxim often looks into the sport world and his homeland - the Arctic, capturing it’s the remote places and people who inhabit them.
Arbugaev has been a winner and participant of various film festivals (IDFA, Vision Du Reel, Moscow Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Cinema Ambient, Golden Unicorn, Lunenburg Doc Fest, DOCUTAH). In 2018 Maxim received an award for The Best Cinematography at Sundance Film Festival (Genesis 2.0, co-director Christian Frei).
